An electrician needs to be able to keep all their tools and supplies near to hand. They should go into a job aware of what tools they will need, but surprises always crop up. If an electrician doesn't have what tool they need close, it could throw off their schedule.
One way to make sure that all the necessary supplies and tools are on-site is to customize your truck. There are several customizations that an electrician can set up.
One important supply that no electrician should ever be without is wire. The issue is that there are so many different kinds and gauges of wire, and more than one kind may be needed on a job. It's important the truck have plenty of wire storage. Wire storage can come in a couple of different styles.
Rods
One style of wire storage is rods that can run in between shelves. The rods are perfect for small to medium-sized wire spools to hang from. That allows for the spools to spin freely so the wire can be pulled off the spool easily. One benefit to using rods like this is that they are adjustable. They can be hung at different heights as needed, allowing for several different rods to be hung at once.
Cubbies
Larger wire spools can't be hung from rods as easily as smaller spools. They are generally too heavy.
One option is to have cubbies installed in shelving racks that run along the side of the truck or van. The larger spools can fit right into the cubby. They should have doors or gates across the front of the cubby to make sure the spools stay where they are put. A unit that has a series of cubbies with rods strung between them would be a great solution.
An electrician can need everything from a pair of small needle-nose pliers to a wire cutter large enough to require two men to use. It is important to make sure that all those tools are securely stored. One reason is that the tools can become projectiles in an accident. Another is that being able to grab everything immediately makes the job easier.
Built-in Toolbox
One way to make sure that everything is stored correctly is to use a built-in toolbox. These boxes can be secured to the wall and floor of the truck so that it won't move. With customizations like this, the electrician can choose to have a toolbox that is a permanent part of the truck, or one that can be removed as needed. This kind of box would have wheels that would lock into depressions in the truck.
Locked Drawers
There are certain tools and supplies that an electrician uses that can be very expensive or dangerous. That's when locked drawers become necessary. The drawers can be set so that they are paired with shelves, which can give more flexibility to the storage space.
Another option is to have an entire section of drawers. There are a variety of locks that can be placed on the drawers, depending on what is going to be in them.
